MicroLED screens in everyday devices

How far are microLED screens from the phones, watches and TVs that ordinary people buy?

MicroLED screens are on sale in large commercial displays. LG launched a range in September 2025 aimed at boardrooms, studios and virtual production, with no prices or brightness figures published. Phones, watches and mainstream TVs with microLED screens are not on sale in the sources reviewed. Apple reportedly dropped a microLED watch project in 2024, and Samsung reportedly stopped microLED TV production in 2026 and now outsources panel manufacturing. The microdisplay maker JBD says it is moving its consumer AR microdisplays toward mass production, with a phased rollout in the second half of 2026, read from its October 2025 announcement. The main barriers are placing very large numbers of tiny chips with very few defects, the cost of the chips, and the equipment needed to inspect them.

WHERE WE AREPilots

Close. Early pilots are running in the real world.

MicroLED screens are sold in commercial and large-format products, and LG has launched a range aimed at boardrooms, studios and virtual production. The sources reviewed show no microLED phone, watch or mainstream TV on sale. Two large makers have reportedly scaled back consumer work: Apple dropped a watch project and Samsung stopped TV production. JBD reports moving AR microdisplays toward volume production, but no source gives output figures or a confirmed start date. Pilot fits better than scaling, because limited sales in niche products are shown and wide adoption in everyday devices is not.

The road so far

1 of 5 steps done, 2 in progress.

  1. Done · 23 Sept 2025Large commercial and professional screens on sale

LG Electronics USA's press release, dated 23 September 2025, lists three LSAP ProAV Series MicroLED models with pixel pitches of 0.78 mm, 0.94 mm and 1.25 mm and says they are available now. It aims them at boardrooms, home theatres, virtual production and broadcast studios. It gives no price, brightness or efficiency figures. [1]

  2. In progress · 15 May 2026Microdisplays for consumer AR moving toward volume production

JBD launched its Roadrunner microdisplay platform in October 2025 with a 2.5 µm pixel pitch, down from 4 µm for its Hummingbird series. Its first priority is polychrome projectors. JBD said it was making steady progress toward mass production, with a phased market rollout in the second half of the following year, which is 2026. On 15 May 2026 it said it had moved from a 4-inch to a 12-inch reconstructed wafer platform, with reconstitution yield above 98 percent on a pilot line. It gave no unit volumes, cost figures or start date for volume production. [5][6]

  3. In progress · 27 May 2025Chips placed and inspected at yields that suit full-size screens

At SID Display Week 2025, as reported by Insight Media, the BOE chief technology officer said mass transfer at Gen 6 panel size is not yet available, and the AUO chief technology officer said microLED chip yield is still too low, with too many defects. A PlayNitride executive gave chip yield as 85 percent, then 95 percent, and now 99.5 percent. These are the author's summaries of panel remarks, not verbatim quotes. A 2024 review states that inorganic micro-LEDs can be fabricated down to 1 µm², with a bracketed equivalent of about 20,000 pixels per inch. That is a fabrication capability, not a product figure. [4][7]

  4. Not started · 22 Mar 2024MicroLED watch or phone display in a consumer product

Apple reportedly ended its in-house microLED display project in March 2024. The project was meant to debut in the Apple Watch Ultra. MacRumors, reporting Bloomberg's account from Mark Gurman, said microLED was too expensive and too complex for Apple to design. Apple is reported to keep OLED for the Apple Watch for now and to be eyeing microLED for other projects down the road. The article notes that Gurman had earlier disputed a cancellation rumour. [2]

  5. Not started · 12 May 2026Mainstream microLED TVs at consumer prices

A May 2026 HDTVtest report, citing DigiTimes, says Samsung had made microLED TVs only to order, that production has now stopped altogether, and that Samsung now outsources panel manufacturing and bonding, which it previously did in-house. DigiTimes reportedly put Samsung's sales at around 100 microLED TVs a year. The article records no reply from Samsung. These figures are reported, not verified against the original DigiTimes report. [3]

Why it matters

Most people would meet microLED in phones, watches and TVs. microLED promises brighter, thinner and more power-efficient screens, and wearable and augmented reality displays would gain most from very small, bright pixels. The sources reviewed give no brightness or power figures for consumer devices. Whether microLED reaches these devices depends mainly on manufacturing yield and cost, and the sources reviewed show both are still limiting.

What stands in the way

  • Mass transfer, which moves very large numbers of tiny chips onto a display backplane, is not yet available at Gen 6 panel size, according to the BOE chief technology officer at a 2025 panel.
  • Chip yield is still too low, with too many defects, according to the AUO chief technology officer at the same panel. A PlayNitride executive reports 99.5 percent, but the sources do not say whether that is enough for full-size screens.
  • MicroLED cost is still over half of display cost, according to the author's summary of the same panel. The remark is not attributed to a named speaker.
  • Inspection of tiny chips needs better and faster equipment at a reasonable cost. A PlayNitride executive expects this bottleneck to be resolved within 1 to 2 years of May 2025.
  • Consumer demand is unproven. Samsung reportedly sold around 100 microLED TVs a year before stopping production, and Apple reportedly dropped its watch project in 2024 as too expensive and too complex.

Signals to watch

  • A microLED phone, watch or mainstream TV on sale at a consumer price, with a published brightness and power figure.
  • JBD or another microdisplay maker announcing the start of volume production, with unit volumes and yields for the full device process.
  • Mass transfer yields for full-size panels reported by a manufacturer that is not a vendor making its own claims.
  • Samsung or Apple statements about microLED plans after the 2024 and 2026 reports.
  • Chip inspection equipment that can check very small chips before they are placed, reported as commercially available.
